Beyond the Portfolio: What Really Matters When Finding Creative Talent

Having spent many years working in television and broadcast, and later working with regional creative agencies, government and semi-government organisations across the UAE, I've had the opportunity to work with some incredibly talented people.
But one challenge has remained consistent throughout my career: finding the right creative talent for the right project isn't always easy.
And it's not necessarily because there's a shortage of talent. There are some brilliant freelancers, filmmakers, photographers, editors, animators and designers out there. The challenge is finding people who have the right combination of skills, experience, attitude and understanding of what a project actually needs.
A Great Portfolio Is a Starting Point
A strong portfolio or showreel is important. It's often the first thing someone looks at when considering a freelancer for a project.
But a good showreel doesn't always tell you the full story.
What was your actual involvement in the work? Did you lead the creative process, or were you part of a wider team? Can you deliver that same standard of work independently? And can you adapt your skills to a different brief?
These are all questions that matter when someone is deciding whether to work with you.
Being clear about your role, your experience and the type of projects you've worked on can make a real difference.
And if you're just starting your career, don't be discouraged by not having an extensive portfolio. Personal projects, university assignments and independent creative work can be just as valuable in showing your potential.
It's Not Just About Skills. Mindset Matters Too.
Over the years, I've realised that some of the best working relationships aren't necessarily with the people who have the most impressive portfolios.
They're with people who communicate well, understand the brief, ask the right questions and take ownership of their work.
In a fast-moving production environment, timelines can be tight, briefs can evolve and clients sometimes need things turned around quickly.
Having someone who is adaptable, reliable and genuinely invested in delivering good work makes a huge difference.
Technical skills can develop over time, but having the right mindset and approach to working with others is equally important.
Why Creative Tests Can Be Valuable
Increasingly, businesses and agencies may ask potential freelancers to complete a small creative test before committing to a project.
This could be a short edit, a design exercise, an animation sample or a simple task based on a brief.
I understand why this happens.
When you're working on projects with demanding timelines and high client expectations, you need reassurance that someone can interpret a brief, apply their skills and deliver within an agreed timeframe.
A showreel shows what you've done before. A well-designed test can help demonstrate how you approach something new.
For freelancers, it can also be an opportunity to showcase their thinking, creativity and ability to work to a brief.
Of course, these tests should be fair, clearly defined and respectful of people's time. Larger or commercially usable assignments should be paid.
But being open to demonstrating your abilities, particularly when you're building new relationships, can sometimes open doors.
Good Work Builds Long-Term Relationships
One thing I've seen repeatedly throughout my career is that when you find someone who understands what you need and consistently delivers, you want to work with them again.
It's really that simple.
Clients and agencies value people they can depend on. Someone who communicates, meets deadlines, understands feedback and takes pride in what they deliver.
And for freelancers, building those relationships can be just as valuable as finding the next project.
A successful first collaboration can lead to repeat work, recommendations and opportunities you might not otherwise have come across.
